Bill Viola, in his essay titled "The Porcupine and the Car (Reasons for Knocking at an Empty House):" "...the main problem for artists using video these days lies in deciding what *not* to record. Making a videotape, therefore, might not be so much the creation or building up of some thing, but more like the cutting or carving away of everything else until only a specific thing remains."
John Cage, from his essay "Experimental Music: Doctrine (Silence):" "Dad says he does his best work when he is sound asleep. I was explaining at the New School that the way to get ideas is to do something boring. For instance, composing in such a way that the process of composign is boring induces ideas. They fly into ones head like birds. Is that what Dad meant?"
From the foreward of Silence: "As I see it, poetry is not prose simply because poetry is in one way of another formalized. It is not poetry by reason of its content or ambiguity but by reason of its allowing musical elements (time, sound) to be introduced into the world of words. Thus, traditionally, information no matter how stuffy (e.g. the sutras and shastras of India) was transmitted in poetry. It was easier to grasp that way."
The book will be a layering, an unfolding of meaning. It will begin as a poem and will either have layers, one on top of the other, or will unfold out. Now, how will this inform the installation?
