leaving the sewing patterns behind

was really tough. but i think i may have found a way out of them, that could be really exciting. i took gigi's advice and just lifted a phrase from my writing to begin with. i chose "you can't make words out of honey" because it had a personal joke for me, and relates to this idea that the thing and its word representation aren't the same thing. so i just started writing the line over and over w/out lifting my pen off the paper, so it looks like stitching. next i cut strips of tracing paper all the same size and wrote the line on these pieces, roughly through the middle on each on. now i'm going to connect all the pieces and start working with them sculpturally.

what's exciting about this for me is that i'm the machine making the words, not relying on the words that are already there, constricted by the baggage attached to dress patterns. it's liberating. And of course, i can still keep the sewing reference, AND the language once again directs the piece but isn't distracting by its content b/c you can't really read it. But you can read it enough to know they're words.
